Jet lag and naps: help your toddler settle into local time

You land, the sun is out, and your toddler is wide awake while you secretly want a nap. Or the reverse: it’s mid-afternoon and they’ve crashed hard. Jet lag with a toddler can feel like a circus, but a few steady habits make it much kinder.

First: how big is the shift?

For a one- to three-hour time change and a short trip, staying on “home time” often works. You don’t need to rewrite the schedule. Crossing four hours or more, or staying longer than a week? Then switch to local time. Expect about one adjustment day per time zone. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a law.

Light is your best friend

Daylight is the strongest reset button for the body clock. Flying east (bedtime needs to move earlier)? Seek morning outdoor light. Flying west (bedtime can slide later)? Let in some light in the late afternoon and early evening. If your child wakes very early at the destination, keep the room dim for a while and save bright light for the wake time you want.

Naps: keep them short at first

A long “wrong” afternoon nap feels like a rescue, but it often wrecks bedtime. Cap off-schedule naps to about thirty to sixty minutes for the first day or two. Does your toddler fade at 4 p.m. local time? Let them rest briefly, then wake them so evening can still start early and calmly.

Meals on local time

Food helps the body shift. Line up breakfast, lunch and dinner with local hours as soon as you can, even if sleep is still messy. Bring the familiar bedtime ritual along: lovey, book, song. That anchor feels like home, wherever you are.

Pre-adjust before you leave? Optional

Shifting bedtime by fifteen to thirty minutes a night for three or four days toward destination time can help with a big change. Too much fuss? Arriving and adjusting on the spot is fine too. Plenty of families do exactly that.

Realistic expectations

Keep the first days light: playground, ice cream, a short walk. Skip the attraction marathons. Toddlers often adapt faster than adults, so you may be the one still awake at 2 a.m. That’s normal, and it passes.
