Hunger turns the sweetest toddler into a tiny storm, and at 10,000 metres you don’t want experiments. You don’t need a suitcase of treats. A smart selection and a bit of timing will do.
Familiar beats new
Travel day is not the moment to introduce quinoa crisps. Pack what your child already likes at home; familiar flavours mean less protest. Save one small, exciting “special” snack for the hardest moment: the boarding queue, turbulence or the hour before landing.
Dry, sturdy, low-crumb
Cabin winners: rice cakes, breadsticks, crackers, raisins, cheese pieces, fruit or yoghurt pouches, soft breakfast cake, and small dried fruit. Avoid anything that smells strong, stains brightly or migrates into the seat fabric. Firm fresh fruit (apple, mandarin) can work too; check whether your destination restricts bringing fresh produce.
Drinks: empty through security
Bring empty bottles and cups and fill them after security. Baby milk and food often fall under exceptions, but the rules vary by airport, so check ahead. During take-off and landing, something to suck or chew helps ears equalise: a dummy, a sip of drink or a chewy bite.
Rotate, don’t buffet
Don’t unveil the whole stash at once. One tub, then something else. That keeps novelty alive and stops everything disappearing in twenty minutes. A small backpack for your toddler with two snacks they “manage themselves” also gives a nice sense of control.
Extra isn’t excess
Delays happen. Pack generously: two packs too many beat a crying toddler while the gate shows “boarding delayed”. Keep a cloth and wipes with the snacks, because you will get sticky hands.
Parents get to eat too
Pack something protein-rich and low-crumb for yourself. A fed parent responds more patiently. Promise.
Security and timing tips
Pack snacks in clear, easy-to-open containers so you’re not wrestling lids in a tiny seat. Offer a small bite before boarding so hunger doesn’t peak during the safety demo. If your toddler is teething or prone to ear discomfort, keep a chewy snack ready for the descent. Airline meals for toddlers are unpredictable, so count on your own stash and treat the trolley as a bonus.
