Sun belongs on holiday. Burnt little shoulders don’t. With toddlers, sun safety works best in layers, with shade, clothing and timing doing most of the work before the SPF bottle comes out.
Shade is layer one
Seek trees, umbrellas, beach tents or the stroller canopy. Babies under six months should stay out of direct sun as much as possible. Toddlers too: plan outdoor play outside the harshest hours, roughly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or swap in shade breaks.
Clothes and hat: layer two
Light, tightly woven clothes or long-sleeve UV swimwear cover more than cream alone. A wide-brim hat (ideally with a chin strap) protects face, ears and neck. Kids’ sunglasses with solid UV protection are a bonus if your child will keep them on.
Apply smart: layer three
Choose broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB) with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously 15 to 30 minutes before you go out, with extra care for the face, ears, hands, feet and the backs of the knees. Reapply about every two hours, and sooner after swimming, sweating or towelling off. Cloudy weather still counts: a large share of UV gets through, and sand and water bounce rays back.
Babies and sensitive skin
For the youngest, shade and covering clothes matter most; sunscreen on small exposed patches can sometimes help, but check with your doctor if unsure. If irritation appears, try a mineral product with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
Drink and cool down
Offer water often, even if your child doesn’t ask. Redness, crankiness or overheating? Straight into shade, lighter clothes, cool with lukewarm water. Blisters, fever, or a baby under one with a burn: contact a doctor.
Make it a ritual
“Hat on, cream on, then play” as a fixed little song prevents arguments. You do the same. Example works faster than explanation.
Don’t forget reflection and altitude
On the beach, by the pool or on snow, UV bounces back, so you can burn faster than you think, even at the edge of the shade. At higher altitudes the sun is stronger. Pack enough cream (minis for the day bag, a bigger tube for the room) and set a phone reminder to reapply. Between buckets and waves, you’ll forget the clock.
